HER SONG

I wanted to have an audio of the song Daylan wrote and sang at Mom's service.

As you listen please note:
  • The words are below, you can follow along as you listen.
  • Daylan is sick(cold, achy, sniffles).....I begged him to record his song this weekend(he would have much rather waited).  I wanted it done, worried if we did't do it soon....we may never get to it.
  • Add to being sick(sniffling), the phone rang while he was recording......it's not the the quality Daylan would like, but he just kept rolling(and did no editing)It's DONE, I'm glad!
  • It seemed easier to upload as a slideshow so I added a few photos......most are repeats from the service.
  • Thanks Daylan!

HER SONG

She was a daughter,
Loyal and proud of where she came from
And she loved them,
Cause they raised her with a big strong heart

She was a sister,
Always ready to help lend a helping hand

They grew together,
Picking up each other when they fell down

Chorus:
And its her records playing them old country tunes,
As her soft feet shuffled along
And its 1 2 3 as she dances around the room through the night

She was a mother,
Of two beautiful kids she raised

She taught them,
All the differences between right and wrong

She was a wife,
To the farming man she adored

They loved, like no one I’ve seen before

Chrous:
And its her records playing them old country tunes,
As her soft feet shuffled along
And its 1 2 3 as she dances around the room through the night
And its a spruce guitar, struming those old Presley tunes,
As her soft feet shuffled along
And its 1 2 3 as he spins her around the beautiful back porch

She was a grandmother
Too a bunch of rowdy kids
She watched us,
As we explored her beautiful yard

But she never had her own song,
But it would be.....

Loved ones playing cards,
Trees filling up the front yard
Gardening in the summers heat,
And putting up her tired feet
Apron covered in flour,
Happily baking for hours
Kissing that farming man,
Holding those children’s hands

Chorus:
And its her records playing those old country tunes.
As her soft feet shuffled along
And its 1 2 3 as she's dancing around the room through the night
And its a spruce guitar, strumming those Presley tunes,
As her soft feet shuffled along
And its 1 2 3 as s dances around her beautiful back porch

Its bagpipes playing Amazing Grace,
As her soft feet have moved on
And its 1 2 3 cause now its's our turn

to dance along for her.

one month

We are about an hour away from the time Mom was taken into the Bonnyville hospital..........when I think back at what has happened over the last month I find it very hard to believe, seems unreal!

What was thought would be a few days in the hospital, turned into losing her......feels so odd a month later, can reality take this long to set in?  I know it's real.....but it sure doesn't feel like it!

Mom would just love this card.....a rooster on it, so perfect!

Grace Elaine Smith funeral service message
Grace and peace to you all from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
As I always do, I want to begin this message by thanking Grace’s family for meeting with me. Jeep, Daryl and Donna, you were all very candid and very hospitable as you welcomed me into Grace’s home. Which, coincidentally, I learned was truly a home that Grace made with all of her character and talent. I truly appreciated the time that you took in order to tell me so much about Grace.
I thought about today’s message, and the one word that kept coming back to my mind was grace…Grace, the wonderful lady who has touched so many lives and grace, the wonderful gift of God that touches everyone’s life in so many ways.
G is for Grace the Gram who loved her grandkids. Her family meant everything to her and Grace really enjoyed watching her grandkids playing hockey and she took an interest and pride in everything they did. I also learned that G is for Grace the Gardener who loved her flowers, her garden and her trees. She did so much to beautify her home with gardening that Jeep joked it was only natural that her funeral would be directed by the Grace Gardens Funeral Chapel from St. Paul.
R, I learned, is for Grace the Recorder of family history. One of her pride and joys was the history book she worked so hard on and a dream of hers was to complete another history book on the life and times of her parents; something that sadly the Alzheimer’s robbed her of. In keeping with that desire to record every moment the family showed me the multitude of pictures Grace took. Grace firmly believed that pictures showed what you did in life and she truly was a gifted photographer. Jeep and the family wanted me to make a special note of the books here on display for all of you to look at later on.
A is for Grace the Artistic lady who had an eye for beauty and a talent for creativity. She loved to paint; whether it was the house, the fence or the granary, Grace kept it all beautiful and Jeep noted that his beloved wife had the steadiest hand and the straightest eye for decorating their home. A is also for Grace the very Able lady who was capable and well-known for her abilities to do so many things and do them well. One of the first things her family told me was that her hands could do anything.
C stands for Grace the Cook. That passion for gardening and her other loves for picking berries and keeping chickens were put to good use in her capacity to cook. Everything she made was good and she was well known for her Poppy Chiffon Cake. And for many years, grace cooked with her many good friends in the Glendon catering Club. C also stands for Grace the collector who loved going to auctions and sales to pick up and add top her collections of records, antiques, crocks and lanterns.
And last, but not least and certainly not all there is to say about this multi-talented and lovable lady,
E stands for Grace the easy-going friend and neighbor who had so many friends largely, I think, because she was not a gossiping lady nor was she judgmental towards others. To Grace it was important that you treat everyone the same and she often told her kids and grandkids that you can’t take back words so if you have nothing good to say, don’t say anything at all. And E also stands for Grace the endearing lady whom so many people deeply loved with sincerity. All you need to do is look around this Hall today to see how much she was indeed loved and how much she loved others in return.
Indeed, she was Grace, the wonderful lady who touched so many lives.

This now brings me to the other grace I mentioned earlier: and that is the grace of God that touches everyone’s life. John 1; 16 says that “from the fullness of (God’s) grace, we have all received one blessing after another”.
Blessed is the man or woman who receives blessings from God’s hand and recognizes them for what they are. Many people go on through life blissfully ignorant of what God does for them day and daily. We owe even the breath in our lungs right now and the next beat of our hearts to the grace of God who spares us to see each consecutive second of our lives.
Isaiah 26: 10 says that though grace is shown to the wicked, they do not learn righteousness; even in a land of uprightness they go on doing evil and regard not the majesty of the Lord. How sad it is for God’s creatures, you and I, to go about ignorant of our Creator. We all love the beauty of God’s artistic flair and His handiwork in flowers and trees and in those whom we love so dearly. It is indeed by the grace of God that you all came to the experience of knowing Grace and being blessed by having her in your life.
But we are frail human beings bound up in our sinful nature and so we often disregard the One who has made us and all that is around us. We can become blinded to the things of God by looking anywhere else except to God; which is why Jonah 2: 8 says that “those who cling to worthless idols forfeit the grace that could be theirs”.
So in thinking about Grace today and about the grace of God, I simply want to illuminate to all of you that regardless of what you accept as truth, the absolute truth of God is that you receive blessings in this life from the fullness of His grace. But more importantly that God’s Word tells us that when it comes to this life and the life everlasting beyond this life, Ephesians 2; 8 & 9 boldly says that  “it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— not by works, so that no one can boast.”
Do you understand that, congregation?  I would be like the apostle Paul and urge you not ot receive the grace of God in vain. We are frail and weak people and we cannot do, think or say anything in order to be saved because it is only by God’s grace that we are redeemed. And this is why the Lord tells us in 2 Corinthians 12: 9 saying, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” It is our most gracious God who has saved us and called us to a holy life—not because of anything we have done but because of his own purpose and grace. (2 Timothy 1:9)
May we each and every one of us always and forever recognize His hand upon us for this life we live today by His grace and the life eternal that awaits only for those who by His grace will have true faith in His only begotten Son, our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit, brethren. Amen.

I BELIEVE IN GOD THE FATHER ALMIGHTY, MAKER OF HEAVEN AND EARTH; AND IN JESUS CHRIST HIS ONLY SON, OUR LORD, WHO WAS CONCEIVED BY THE HOLY SPIRIT, BORN OF THE VIRGIN MARY,
SUFFERED UNDER PONTIUS PILATE, WAS CRUCIFIED, DEAD & BURIED.

HE DESCENDED INTO THE STATE OF DEATH AND WAS RAISED AGAIN ON THE 3RD DAY. HE ASCENDED INTO HEAVEN AND IS SEATED AT THE RIGHT HAND OF GOD THE FATHER ALMIGHTY.FROM THERE HE SHALL COME TO JUDGE THE QUICK AND THE DEAD.

I BELIEVE IN THE HOLY CHRISTIAN CHURCH, THE COMMUNION OF SAINTS, THE FORGIVENESS OF SINS, THE RESURRECTION OF THE DEAD AND THE LIFE EVERLASTING – AMEN.

To Thee, O Lord, I fly
And on Thy help depend;
Thou art my Lord and King Most High;
Do Thou my soul defend.
I praise the Lord above
Whose counsel guides aright;
My heart instructs me in His love
In seasons of the night.

I keep before me still
The Lord Whom I have proved;
At my right hand He guards from ill,
And I shall not be moved.
My heart is glad and blest,
My soul its joy shall tell;
And, lo, my flesh in hope shall rest,
And still in safety dwell.

My soul in death's dark pit
Shall not be left by Thee;
Corruption Thou wilt not permit
Thy holy one to see.
Life's pathway Thou wilt show,
To Thy right hand wilt guide,
Where streams of pleasure ever flow,
And boundless joys abide.

rough-ish day......thanks for helping to ease it Willie.

this song was played during the processional.......seemed perfect.

Bit of a story about this song since the funeral.  Danica has been playing a lot, and the little girls have grown to love this old old song.......they now know the most of the words, Danica hears them singing it, and they ask her to play it again.......SO CUTE!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jpbHt7Cqjd8

Thank you to this lady for all the photos.....it was a request from the family, so glad she said yes!

Daryl(my brother), Peggy(our friend), and me......lifelong friends!

NOTE: I did not post ALL photos, especially of all those that were in attendance(may add more later).

A great way to heal hearts is to meet/eat together, and that we did!

As I look through these photos, I am once again overwhelmed by the number of family and friends that attended Mom's service.....such a nice feeling.  I am thankful for every hug, hand shake, smile, shared tear I received that day, even if there are too many to remember!

Firstly Virginia, Mom's caregiver......we asked her to say Grace, no one was better suited....she did an amazing job.  Not easy, getting up in front of a few hundred people you've never met, and delivering such a personal blessing......I loved hearing her voice. Thank you Virginia.....so much!

Our family is so blessed to have her in our lives, I am sorry it's been during such difficult times, wish she could have met us all when we were at our best.

Very dear friend of Mom's for many many years.......Julia has been Mom's friend for as long as I can remember.  They were friends before my time, back to their school days.

Larry and Terry have been friends of Mom's for a very long time.......they would do anything for Mom , and did!  They went above and beyond from what friends do, treated Mom like family.  Many many times they would go out of their way to visit Mom, even long after Mom could remember they were her good friends.  On the days Daryl or Lori couldn't pick Mom up for Adam or Evan's hockey games, they could usually count on Larry to give Mom a ride to her much loved games.   Will never forget how good they were to her, and how hard it was for them to lose her.  Long before all of this sadness they had many years of good times, shared a ton of laughs, argued and laughed, danced and danced, laughed and laughed some more.....I know for sure the good memories out number the tough ones!

22 out of 25 of Mom's nieces and nephews attended her service, I love that.....she would too!

At the cemetary....

Whispering Pines played in the background as Mom was carried to her final resting place(in a beautiful cemetery near Glendon).

Jeep wanted all the grandkids to ride with him out to the cemetery.  In this truck is he and the 6 grandkids(none of them children).......now that's a LOAD(7 adults in the truck)!

Open mic

A poem Mom wanted for her funeral.....delivered by Elaine Smith during the open mic.

I AM GONE
You can shed tears that I am gone,
or you can smile because I have lived.
You can close your eyes and pray that I will come back,
or you can open your eyes and see all that I have left.
Your heart can be empty because you cannot see me,
or you can be full of laughter and the love you shared with me.
You can turn your back on tomorrow
and live only yesterday,
or you can be happy for tomorrow because of yesterday.
You can remember me and only that I am gone,
or you can cherish my memory and let it live on.
You can cry and close your mind, be empty, and turn your back,
or you can do what I would want you to:
smile, open your eyes,
live, love go on!

I can see Mom liking this....a good way to think, I shall do as she requests.

EULOGY for Mom's service

Eulogy for Mom's service.....written and delivered by Danica Siewert(our daughter).   Danica received many well deserved compliments on how well she did......very proud Mom moment for me, it was perfect!

Grandma’s Eulogy
We have gathered here today to cherish, remember and celebrate the life of Grace Smith. I stand before you, deeply honored, to deliver the eulogy of our friend. Our Cousin. Our Auntie. Our sister. Our Grandma. Our mother. Pa’s wife. The beautiful and wonderful, Grandma Grace.
Grandma, was born Grace Elaine, to Glen and Bernice Erickson and was one of five girls. She was delivered by her Aunty Vi in her Grandma Cunningham’s home. From an early age, Grandma learned her way around the kitchen. She was taught from a young age to preserve fruits and vegetables for those long winters in Garth. She may not have known the difference between a screwdriver and a hammer but she did know the difference between a coffee pot and a tea kettle. She enjoyed handmade toys from her daddy and baking in the kitchen with her mom. According to her sisters she was not known for being brave, actually she was kind of a scaredy cat, but she was quite the prankster. She also was not a good sport when it came to games, whether it be losing at cards, striking out in baseball or losing at checkers.
Grandma was always very kind to animals. Cats and dogs often got to enjoy her cooking as they were served behind the old house. Chickens were shown off and bragged about. She could not stand hair in anyone’s eyes and it was a common occurrence for her to trim the bangs of dogs and horse. Any animal that had meaning to someone she loved was welcomed to be buried in the Pet Cemetery behind the house and usually a service was welcomed and encouraged.
Grandma was a collector and if you were lucky, she’d take you for the latest hunt. Her treasures were most often found at garage sales. Or Antique shops. Or auction sales. She has a large collection of crock pots and coil oil lamps which still grace the walls of her home. She was always on the lookout for the record she just might not have. She was always collecting frames because a great picture always needed a great frame. She had closets full of clothes and a pair of shoes to match any outfit you put together. Her collection of chairs just might have been enough to seat everyone here today.
Grandma was always doing what the next expert was going to tell you, long before it was made into a commercial or book. She wore helmets, seatbelts and life jackets long before it was law. She washed her hands frequently long before it was a commercial to stop the spread of the flu. She never liked to take any sort of medication or get any immunizations. She always kept her nails short and scrubbed clean.
Grandma was an incredibly skilled crafter. She sewed many of her daughters’ clothes. She fabric covered countless photo albums. Many books have lasted 30+ years because she preserved the covers with Mac-Tac. Old worn jeans would be turned into large quilts and always with a personalized touch. Halloween costume requests were always taken with a smile and she always delivered above what was desired. Dough was not just reserved for making buns but was also for her dough art creations that hang on many walls. She created many, MANY paper toule pictures, which were always framed. She was always on hand with her expertise when a new home needed a fresh coat of paint.
Grandma had an incredibly green thumb. She always had a large vegetable garden which was usually planted months before, from seed, in her greenhouse. There was always an overabundance of cucumbers and tomatoes for canning. You were always welcome in her garden and rarely got scolded for taking too much. She worked on maintaining a beautiful yard. Planting trees, flowers on the deck and several flower gardens. Often flowers were taken from their plant and pressed into books so she could admire their beauty later. She mowed her grass for years before teaching her grandchildren how to operate the mower. And you always had to ride the mower and then take the push mower around the trees.
Grandma was a master in the kitchen. Cakes and cookies. Breads and buns. Pies and cinnamon buns. Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas were big affairs. Her table would be decked with her best china. Napkins would be artistically folded. Name tags placed strategically. As she watched her family grow the table got longer, often going from the kitchen into the living room. She would be dressed up with an apron while she cooked. And she would only duck out briefly to recurl her hair before everyone sat down to enjoy her long days work. She usually insisted everyone share something. You could share a reason to be thankful. A joke. A song. Or a story. Her fridges, yes there were two, were NEVER empty for family or friends or farmhands. There was always a fresh slice of bread with raspberry jam after mowing the lawn. There was always an open can of peaches for something sweet or garlic dills pickles when you needed to cure a cold.
Grandma’s Kitchen was the heart of her home. It was where she taught us grandkids her favourite recipes. It was where she played games. Where she had drinks with friends. Where she prepared meals for her farming husband, Jeep. Where she shared her regular morning coffee with her son, Daryl. Where she washed, dye and cut her own hair. Where she cut the hair of others. Where she would bird watch. She would welcome line dance lessons in her kitchen. She would listen to her records in the kitchen. She would sort pictures in her kitchen. She would write letters in her kitchen and study history in her kitchen.
Writing and delivering a Eulogy is both an honor and a difficult task. It can bring countless tears. It can bring beaming smiles. It can bring booming laughter. And it can bring overwhelming sadness. To remember and honor and love with all of our heart is the greatest gift we can give Grace. She loved us all. She had memories with us all. And today we give her those memories back. Before we know it, today will become yesterday. And then last week. And then last month. And then we will be saying...”years ago.”

Carry her with you and.....
Smile when you can cucumbers. Think of her when you smell fresh bread. Honor her when you have a glass of wine. Willingly take one more picture. Dance when you hear Elvis. Remember the smile she’d flash you when you completed job number 994 on her to do list. Laugh when you recall an argument you won or lost against her. Go out and use the phrase “Full of piss and vinegar” to describe someone. Remember the floors rugs gracing her vehicles. Buckle up. Cherish the times she let you drive alone....before you were legal. Share a tried and true recipe. Cherish the little things that are dear to you. Pass on the important memories to the ones you love. Love like she loved. And cherish every memory she forgot.

Music for Mom

Louise Onciul played Amazing Grace as we entered the hall......I did not hear one note, I'm sure it sounded very nice.

Emily is such a little trooper(although she's not so little anymore).....I can't count the times I've been so proud of her, this is another.  She played the piano twice during the service.  How Great Thou Art, and an Elvis piece(of course).....Love Me Tender was the second piece Emily played.

Sid & Shirley Smith ended the service by playing Amazing Grace.....Mom's service started and ended with this piece, very fitting.
